World Health Organization (WHO)
The World Health Organization is a specialized United Nations agency established in 1948 and headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. Originally signed by the WHO’s original 51 member states and 10 other nations, the WHO constitution has now been ratified by 194 nations, giving the WHO its 194 member states plus associate and observer members.
The WHO’s mission is and has always been to promote good health worldwide and eliminate threats to public well-being. Today, the WHO’s mission is to eradicate preventable, communicable diseases in the developing world, improve public health and safety as a critical aspect of human development, reduce lifestyle factors that lead to increased mortality, and address inequalities and inequities in government health policy.
